What is a Sales Tax?

A sales tax is an additional charge added on to the listed price of goods and services. Usually the Sales tax is a percentage of the price of the item. Sales taxes are collected by the seller at the time of purchase, and are passed on to the government.

In most states, local governments (like counties, cities, and special districts) are allowed to collect their own sales taxes in addition to the statewide sales tax rate. This means that sales tax rates can be very different, even in locations that are only a few miles from each other!

How to Calculate Sales Tax

To calculate the Sales Tax on the purchase of an item, you need two things: the purchase amount, and the sales tax rate. In our example, we will use a purchase amount of $100, and a sales tax rate of 7.75%. The first step would be to multiply the purchase price of $100 by the sales tax rate of 7.75%. This will give you the amount of sales tax owed on the purchase.

$100 * 7.75% = $7.75

The next step is to add your sales tax to the previous total, and that will provide your final purchase price. In our example, that would give us a total of $107.75.
